This low friction bearing comes with a hybrid protector. It has Rubber seal on one side and a metal shield on the other side. This design enforces optimum performance. It is designed to reap the benefits from both worlds of Sealing/Shielding.
The rubber seal is a great protector against contaminants (but a little bit less efficient than a metal shield due to a tighter seal) and the metal shield, which is very efficient (offers less friction than the rubber seal) but less protective than the rubber seal.
For optimum performance, have the rubber seal facing the outside environment or the area prone to receiving more dirt and contaminants and the metal shield toward the place of less contaminants. In this configuration, you’re getting the great protection with the rubber seal and a better performance by having one less rubber seal being replaced with a metal shield.
To attain the highest efficiency in this bearing (while still maintaining some protection from dirt), you can remove the rubber seal (with maybe an x-acto) and have the metal shield facing the outside environment or the area prone to receiving more dirt and contaminants and the unsealed/unshielded side facing the place of less contaminants.
