Mayer production, "Gaslight" in which they co-star. The film is an important
psychological drama in which Boyer essays a villain role for the first time in his
American screen career. The film was directed by George Cukor, produced by
Arthur Hornblow, Jr.

Ingrid Bergman won her first of two Academy Awards for Best Actress for
Gaslight
, (1944); the other for
Anastasia
(1956). She also won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for
Murder on the Orient
Express
(1974). Charles Boyer received his third of four Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for
Gaslight
(1944); the first for
Conquest
(1937), the second for
Algiers
(1938), the fourth for
Fanny
(1961).
Joseph Cotten is probably best remembered from roles of Jed Leland in
Citizen Kane
(1941), Uncle Charlie
in
Shadow of a Doubt
(1943) or Holly Martens in
The Third Man
(1949).
